Facebook Publishes New Report on the Impact of COVID-19 on Small Businesses

Andrew Hutchinson

Of all the sectors impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, SMBs look set to be among the hardest hit.

Small to medium businesses generally operate at very tight margins as it is, and they don’t have the same safety nets that larger corporations are able to fall back on. As a result, predictions suggest that up to 7.5 million small businesses in America are at risk of shuttering permanently in the coming months unless they’re able to find a way to recoup costs, and get back to some level of regular operation.

The expanded impacts of this – on employment, opportunity, local economies, etc. – are difficult to fully comprehend. But while the forecasts are dire, it’s likely of more value to get some sense of what’s actually happening on the ground. What are SMBs seeing at the moment, how are they dealing with the impacts of the pandemic, and how do they feel about their situations moving forward?

This week, Facebook has published a new report to shed some more light on this, incorporating responses from over 86,000 people who own, manage or work for a small to medium-sized business. The data also includes 9,000 operators of “personal” businesses (i.e. people who reported that they were “self-employed providing goods or services”).

The report provides a range of insights into SMB sentiment, and may also highlight rising areas of opportunity moving forward. You can read Facebook’s full report here, but below are some of the key points of note.

First off, Facebook’s report provides some scale as to how many businesses have actually been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 lockdowns, with a look at the percentage of SMBs in each sector that are currently unable to operate.

Many businesses, of course, have been able to shift to alternate operational models, like working from home or putting more focus on delivery. That makes it difficult to get a true sense of the full impacts of the current lockdowns – but this chart gets a little deeper into the actual reality of the situation.

As per Facebook:

“According to the survey, 31% of small and medium-sized businesses have shut down [entirely] in the last three months. The situation is worse for personal business (52% of which report shutting down), hotels, cafes and restaurants (43%) and services like wellness, grooming, fitness or other professional services (41%).”

Most of these trends are as you would expect, with high exposure businesses going into forced hibernation. But it is interesting to note the scope of the impacts, with all sectors seeing at least some closures. The numbers also wrap some further context around the 36 million unemployment claims in the US over the past six weeks.

The question, then, is how many of these businesses expect to recover, and rebound once the lockdowns are lifted?

That’s obviously difficult to answer, as we don’t know how long it’s going to take to ‘snap back’ to our normal way of life, and the longer the forced closures remain in place, the worse the economic situation gets.

In general, however, the majority of SMBs remain cautiously optimistic.

There are a lot of ‘maybe’s here, but most notably, there are very few ‘No’s. That reflects the pervading uncertainty, but also provides some hope of getting most people back into employment, and the economy back on track, at some stage.

In the report’s further notes, Facebook also provides some context as to current impacts on revenue, even for those businesses that have remained in operation.

Unfortunately, for almost everybody, 2020 is essentially a write-off for growth plans.

But as noted, there are some indicators of future potential, in addition to enduring owner optimism/hope.

More businesses are exploring online connection opportunities and digital payments, which are both progressive steps towards the next generation of consumption.

That may actually end up being the biggest long-term shift we see stemming from the COVID-19 shutdowns. With consumers forced to shop online, many will become more accustomed to the convenience of such, aided by the simplicity of digital payments. For those already working in the digital sector, that could lead to ongoing opportunities to help usher more businesses along this shift, with many, potentially, putting increased reliance on digital connection, and shifting their business models in line with what the next generation of consumers are growing to expect.

Indeed, while eCommerce accounted for only around 16% of total US retail sales in 2019, that figure is steadily inching upwards year after year, a trend that’s expected to continue.

COVID-19 may exacerbate this shift – and while retail is only one of the sectors highlighted here, the trend may well be indicative, which could prompt more businesses to consider their options for digital operations, meeting consumers where they’re spending more and more of their time.

Essentially, the lockdowns have forced many businesses to look at their online opportunities, which could have benefits going forward, and could even help SMBs expand their reach into new markets in future. But the immediate path ahead remains tough and uncertain, at least until some sort of breakthrough is reached.

Hopefully, there are enough alternative revenue paths to keep most SMBs running as we navigate through the pandemic – but it may well be worth exploring digital options, where possible, to align with broader consumption shifts.

Hannah Brown Is Facing Backlash After Posting a Video of Herself Saying the N-Word

by PAMELA AVILA

Hannah Brown is under fire for recording herself saying the N-word.

On Saturday night, Bachelor Nation’s sweetheart went on Instagram Live at one point, she seemed to be trying to remember the lyrics to DaBaby‘s “Rockstar.” She begins singing a few lines aloud and seemingly hesitates when she gets to the line that includes the N-word but says it anyway

After that, Brown seems to go on about her business as if she didn’t just repeat a racial slur on Instagram Live to her 2.8 million followers.

While the Instagram Live video has since expired or been taken down from her account, Instagram accounts like @bachelorteaspill and Reddit users have since captured clips of Brown.

According to @bachelorteaspill’s clips, after a moment she seemingly notices comments on her Instagram Live calling her out for using the racial slur and that’s when she begins to address it.

“I did? I’m so sorry… No, I was singing… I’m so sorry… I don’t think… Maybe I did, maybe it was Patrick [Brown’s brother]. Um, anyway,” Brown says in the video, while simultaneously laughing.

“I really don’t think I said that word, I don’t think I said that word, but now I’m like, oh god,” Brown said, as she continued to address the issue. “I’d never use that word. I’ve never called anybody that.”

“We don’t say that word….So, you know what, I’m going to stay here, and y’all can think I said whatever I did or think I’m something I’m not, but I’m not that…Look, people are going to want to think whatever they want to think of me, get mad at me, whatever. And even if I did accidentally say it, I’m very sorry, I was singing a song and not even thinking.”

While Brown addressed the comments during the Instaram Live, it wasn’t enough for Bachelor Nation fans on social media. Fans also pointed out that instead of holding herself accountable for saying the N-word, Brown and the friend she was with chose to throw other people’s names in an effort to put the blame on someone else.

“so just watched that “apology” and the friend next to her rly threw out another friend’s name and the name of Hannah’s brother. like girl wth you were the ONLY visible and audible person in that video,” one Twitter user wrote. “honestly sounds like her entire friend circle are comfortable w the n word.”

Another user wrote, “I was a big fan of Bachelorette/DWTS Winner Hannah Brown, until she decided to drop a hard N word in a rap song and then smirk and laugh through an “apology”. HB, you’re done in my book! Now considered irrelevant. @hannahbrown.”

“I’m disappointed in @hannahbrown for singing the n word – even in a song. As a woman of color & a Christian, I’ve done my best work to not stereotype white, southern, religious women who do pageants as racist as I’ve experienced them. Come on Hannah B,” wrote another Twitter user

Former Bachelor star Bekah Martinez also took to speak out Brown using the N-word.

“how are people still gonna defend CELEBS with access to SOOO much [privilege], knowledge, and education saying the N-word…even if it’s “just the lyrics to a song”…especially when that person had the wherewithal to skip over the F-word lyric first,” Martinez wrote in a lengthy message posted to her Instagram Stories. “we’ve GOT to hold people accountable to do better otherwise we’re continuing to prioritize the feelings of white people (and someone we “stan”) over ending our country’s loooong history of casual racism and flippant anti-blackness.”

Martinez went on, “and no. you can’t say the N-word just because black people say it. black people reclaimed that use of a word that was used for centuries to oppress and dehumanize them. it’s a word that holds so much historical weight that the black community is still healing from, and parts of the white community are STILL weaponizing for dehumanization, particularly in the south.”

“So no, it’s not cool to just sing it along the lyrics of a song,” she added. “especially not ON YOUR PLATFORM WITH MILLIONS OF FOLLOWERS?!! smh. it’s 2020. at least make a legitimate apology and acknowledge your behavior.”

On Sunday afternoon, Brown took to Instagram to further apologize and address her saying the N-word.

“I owe you all a major apology,” she wrote. “There is no major excuse and I will not justify what I said. I have read your messages and seen the hurt I have caused. I own it all. I am terribly sorry and know that whether in public or private, this language is unacceptable. I promise to do better.”

Kylie Jenner’s Daughter Stormi Appears to Have An Instagram

BY EBONY MARCH

Kylie Jenner’s daughter Stormi appears to have her own Instagram account. Could it be that the toddler, who celebrated her second birthday in February, is bucking to take over mom’s status as an Internet superstar?

Despite the good news that Stormi is on the ‘gram, Keeping Up With the Kardashians fans won’t be able to follow the little lady anytime soon. Even mom Kylie isn’t following her daughter’s latest venture. This could be because she’s the mastermind behind the social media profile. After all, since Stormi’s birth, Kylie has been great about marking her daughter’s milestones. She’s also adept at creating wonderfully viral and unique moments that allow her daughter’s cheeky personality to shine through. Who could forget the time when Stormi inspired Kylie’s “Rise and Shine” moment, or Stormi’s first time snowboarding?

ITTLE STORMI ISN’T THE FIRST KARDASHIAN-JENNER OFFSPRING TO GO SOCIAL. EARLIER THIS YEAR, MASON DISICK (SON OF KOURTNEY KARDASHIAN AND SCOTT DISICK) GOT INTO HOT WATERWhen He Attempted To Spill Some TeaABOUT HIS AUNTIE KYLIE AND HER RELATIONSHIP WITH TRAVIS SCOTT.  KOURTNEY RESPONDED TO THE BACKLASH, AND DISCUSSED WHAT THEY DID WITH HIS INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT: “HE DIDN’T ASK US,” SHE EXPLAINED. “I DID DELETE IT BECAUSE SCOTT AND I JUST FELT LIKE HE ISN’T [OLD ENOUGH]. HE’S 10. I THINK THERE’S AN AGE LIMIT WITH INSTAGRAM, I THINK IT’S 13. I THINK THE THING THAT REALLY WORRIES ME WITH KIDS IS, PEOPLE CAN BE SO MEAN. I MADE IT PRIVATE AND THEN [MASON] TURNED IT BACK TO PUBLIC WITHOUT ME KNOWING…SO I JUST [DELETED IT]. IT’S GONE, IT’S DELETED.”

However, Stormi is just learning the intricacies of the English language, so it’s safe to assume that she didn’t start her page all by herself. Regardless, the Kardashians and Jenners are all proud followers, and given Stormi’s young age, the page is being kept private, for now. Even with that precaution, it’s a wonder if Stormi will be given the crash course in online privacy that Mason clearly missed.

While it’s adorable and fun the way Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott integrate their little one into their busy lives and favorite pastimes, leave the kid something to look forward to when she gets older. Surely there will be many distractions available to her when she gets older that haven’t even been invented yet, but this is one that should be treated as a rite of passage for her when she is old enough to decide it for herself. Travis and Kylie clearly love Stormi with all their hearts and celebrating her young life is such a joyous thing for them to do. However, how will they feel when she wakes up one day and doesn’t take joy in any of the things around her because they’re so easily acquired? That’s the danger of spoiling a kid. For now, they should delete the Instagram page and just continue to post guarded content about Stormi on their own accounts, or simply keep the Instagram handle for her until she’s 13 or older.
