‘Star Wars’ vs. ‘Star Trek’: The Most Talked-About Difference Between the 2 Franchises

Alice Stone

Star Wars or Star Trek? Fans have argued for decades over which is better. Some enjoy both of the franchises, but even those fans usually have a favorite.

But comparison between the two may actually be unfair. Comparing Star Wars to Star Trek isn’t really comparing apples to apples, after all. There is at least one big difference between the franchises.

The conflicts are totally different

Both universes contain multiple galaxies and diverse creatures. ‘Aliens’ of all kinds coexist, despite different languages and abilities. While in real life, clashing cultures can often lead to huge conflict, that doesn’t usually seem to be the case in the Star Wars universe. The main conflict in all movies has to do with the power struggle between the Jedi and Sith.

Species doesn’t seem to matter. There is a diverse array of creatures on the Jedi side as well as on the side of the Empire. The Sith Empire, a fascist regime that faces constant rebellion from all over the galaxy, is something that could happen in the real world. History is full of examples of fascist governments. But to have no conflict over language or species seems almost too unreal.

But Star Trek doesn’t hide from cultural conflict. It has the same diversity of species, but in contrast to Star Wars, conflict is sometimes driven by the differences between them. Although both franchises mimic the human experience, they do it in different ways. They focus on different aspects of humanity, and draw inspiration from different points in human history.

Conflicts are solved differently, too

https://www.instagram.com/p/CABVOS6FVEy/?utm_source=ig_embed

Not only is the nature of conflict different in Star Wars versus Star Trek, but the way conflict is resolved is different as well. Star Wars, well, usually has a more violent solution to conflict. That makes sense, considering it is about war, as the title suggests.

The entire franchise is based on conflict between the Empire and the rebel forces. Despite the fact that there are almost ten Star Wars movies, there has been no resolution to that conflict, and there probably won’t be one in the near future.

The rebels may never win, or if they do, they’ll be constantly fighting off fragments of the destroyed Empire. So, conflicts in Star Wars are never really solved, but if they are, they will be solved by violence.

Star Trek, on the other hand, is famous for its grand speeches. That’s how conflicts are usually resolved in Spock’s universe. The characters are more prone to using words to solve problems, and often that means finding common ground between opposing parties. When they do use weapons, they don’t use lightsabers.

Weapons are different between ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Star Trek’

https://www.instagram.com/p/CAanAYajAWJ/?utm_source=ig_embed

The most popular weapons in each universe reflect the different styles of conflict and conflict resolution. The lightsaber is a Jedi’s best friend. This is a very destructive weapon, whose successful use almost always leads to death or dismemberment of a foe.

Other Star Wars characters use similar types of deadly weapons, like laser guns. These firearms are similar to the guns we know here on Earth. They’re for killing. In fact, the Star Wars universe is home to the deadliest weapon of all time- the Death Star. It can destroy whole planets at the push of a button.

On the other hand, Star Trek phasers have three settings. That means enemies can be stunned. Killing isn’t a requirement, which makes conflicts easier to solve with words. When enemies can be disabled, not just killed, there’s hope for peace.

New Chloe x Halle Lyrics Push Twitter To Drag Diggy Simmons Over Fan Allegations

By Madusa S.

Twitter was on attack mode.

Black stan Twitter is back at it again, and this time, they’re tearing up Diggy Simmons in defense of Chloe Bailey from R&B duo Chloe x Halle, based off lyrics from their new album Ungodly Hour, released Thursday.

The drama is best summed up by one Twitter user writing, “I come on twitter at 3am to y’all dragging Diggy bc apparently he cheated on Chloe bc they apparently dated and got a white girl pregnant and y’all got all of that from a few lyrics from Chloe x Halle’s album…MAM.”

The theory is, Diggy cheated on the 21-year-old songstress and managed to get another woman pregnant. Twitter had Chloe’s back and wasted no time to eat Diggy up, despite the limited evidence to support this theory. The 25-year-old Grown-ish star was even trending on the social media platform. See below for some of the choice words fans had for Diggy.

The lyrics in question from the new album that apparently confirm these theories come from the track “Busy Boy” where Chloe sings, “I think I just stumbled on your girlfriend’s page/Congratulations/She sayin’ that the baby comin’ any day.”

Fans also point to “Do It,” where Halle sings, “No drama, no baby mamas.”

Rumors of Chloe and Diggy being an item have been floating around since their on-screen romance on Grown-ish as Doug and Jazz. Last year, paparazzi captured shots of the two on a potential date. On an Instagram live, Halle hinted at Chloe dating someone from the Grown-ish cast in real life.

Taylor Swift Urged Tennessee Leaders To Remove Its Racist Statues In An Emotional Instagram Post

BY SAVANNAH WALSH2019 american music awards arrivalsAXELLE/BAUER-GRIFFINGETTY IMAGES

Today, Taylor Swift let her 134 million Instagram followers know where she stands when it comes to preserving monuments that honor racist figures. Her powerful post comes a few days after finally advocating for the Black Lives Matter movement on Twitter.

“I’m asking the Capitol Commission and the Tennessee Historical Commission to please consider the implications of how hurtful it would be to continue fighting for these monuments,” Swift captioned a lengthy statement on Instagram. “When you fight to honor racists, you show black Tennesseans and all of their allies where you stand, and you continue this cycle of hurt. You can’t change history, but you can change this. ?”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CBWQOzjDNc2/?utm_source=ig_embed

In her post, Swift spoke about how statues celebrating Edward Carmack and Nathan Bedford Forrest, a pair of historical figures with well-documented racist pasts, made non-white visitors of her home state feel unwelcome. She outlined racist acts from both Carmack and Bedford Forrest, which are among several controversial statues to fall around the world during protests after the unjust deaths of George FloydBreonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery.

“Taking down statues isn’t going to fix centuries of systemic oppression, violence and hatred that black people have had to endure but it might bring us one small step closer to making ALL Tennesseans and visitors to our state feel safe – not just the white ones,” she concluded her post. “We need to retroactively change the status of people who perpetuated hideous patterns of racism from ‘heroes’ to ‘villains.’ And villains don’t deserve statues.” Swift also shared this message in a thread on Twitter. This content is imported from Twitter. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

https://twitter.com/taylorswift13/status/1271534728777252868?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1271534728777252868&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.elle.com%2Fculture%2Fcelebrities%2Fa32854390%2Ftaylor-swift-tennessee-racist-monuments-instagram-post%2F

The last time Swift referenced the Black Lives Matter movement, she asked her Twitter followers to register to vote and directed them towards Former President Barack Obama’s Medium article about sustaining the movement’s current momentum. “Racial injustice has been ingrained deeply into local and state governments, and changes MUST be made there,” she wrote. “In order for policies to change, we need to elect people who will fight against police brutality and racism of any kind. #BlackLivesMatter.”

https://twitter.com/taylorswift13/status/1270432966058160135?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1270432966058160135&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.elle.com%2Fculture%2Fcelebrities%2Fa32854390%2Ftaylor-swift-tennessee-racist-monuments-instagram-post%2F

Swift has drawn criticism from fans for not speaking out about her political beliefs sooner. Most notably, she stayed quiet about endorsing a candidate during the 2016 election, leading to conspiracies that she aligned with white supremacist beliefs. That silence was broken in October 2018 when she announced she’d be supporting Democrat Phil Bredesen in the U.S. Senate race in Tennessee, encouraging her followers to do the same. Her recent documentary Miss Americana also shows the motives behind this moment and shows her express regret over not speaking up sooner. In her essay about turning 30 for ELLE published last March, Swift explained that she was only beginning to educate herself and find her political voice.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BopoXpYnCes/?utm_source=ig_embed

Swift’s full comments can be read below:

“As a Tennesseean, it makes me sick that there are monuments standing in our state that celebrate racist historical figures who did evil things. Edward Carmack and Nathan Bedford Forrest were DESPICABLE figures in our state history and should be treated as such.

Edward Carmack’s statue was sitting in the state Capitol until it was torn down last week in the protests. The state of Tennessee has vowed to replace it. FYI, he was a white supremacist newspaper editor who published pro-lynching editorials and incited the arson of the office of Ida B. Wells (who actually deserves a hero’s statue for her pioneering work in journalism and civil rights). Replacing his statue is a waste of state funds and a waste of an opportunity to do the right thing.

Then we get to this monstrosity. Nathan Bedford Forrest was a brutal slave trader and the first grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan who, during the Civil War, massacred dozens of black Union soldiers in Memphis. His statue is still standing and July 13th is ‘Nathan Bedford Forrest Day.’ Due to social pressure, the state is trying to overrule this, and Tennesseans might no longer have to stomach it. Fingers crossed.

Taking down statues isn’t going to fix centuries of systemic oppression, violence and hatred that black people have had to endure but it might bring us one small step closer to making ALL Tennesseans and visitors to our state feel safe – not just the white ones. We need to retroactively change the status of people who perpetuated hideous patterns of racism from ‘heroes’ to ‘villains.’ And villains don’t deserve statues.”

San Antonio Spur Lonnie Walker IV Reveals History of Childhood Sexual Abuse in Instagram Post

Posted By Nina Rangel

INSTAGRAM / BUDDAH

Spurs’ shooting guard Lonnie Walker IV surprised fans Thursday by sharing in an emotional Instagram post that he’d been sexually abused as a child.

The revelation accompanied a video explanation of the Spur’s journey with his distinctive towering hairstyle. It also included video of his encounter with clippers, documenting the complete removal of his signature locks.

“The real truth as to why I started doing this in early 5th grade, it was a cloaking device for me,” Walker wrote.

“During the summer of my 5th grade year I was around more family… I was sexually harassed, raped, abused, I even got accustomed to it because being at that age you don’t know what is what,” Walker wrote.

In the post, Walker explained that the had lived in a mindset where his hair was something he could control, and it gave him confidence.

“Me cutting my hair was more than a cut,” he wrote. “My hair was a mask of me hiding the insecurity’s that I felt the world wasn’t ready for. But now [is] better than ever. Out with old. In with the new.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CBULIhVBSon/?utm_source=ig_embed

Walker also made headlines earlier this month when he joined San Antonians in cleaning up vandalized businesses downtown following unrest that played out after a peaceful protest decrying the killing of George Floyd.

“During this protest everyone isn’t seeing eye level, but we have to understand we can only control what we can control,” Walker said in a statement posted to Twitter, accompanied by photos of the cleanup efforts.

Selling Sunset’s Chrishell Jokes On Instagram With Meme About Her Tough Times

The reality star shows off her funny side and creates a meme at the expense of her personal life. Honestly, now we’re in love with her even more!

At the end of Selling Sunset’s latest season, we got a preview for its upcoming season. A lot of dramatic, exciting, and sexy things are going to unfold along with the sad high profile divorce of reality star Chrishell Stause with her husband cum actor Justin Hartley. A few days back, she spoke about how difficult and emotionally draining it was to film her life during those hard times. But, it seems like the 38-year-old feeling much better as recently posted a hilarious meme of her on her IG.

Many viewers were shocked to see Justin and Chrishell splitting just after two years of marriage. Some speculated that the real estate agent wanted to start a family, while her husband wanted to savor his newfound success with the hit show “This Is Us.” The actor was not ready to take the next step as he already has his hands full with a 15-year-old daughter, Isabella Hartley, from his first wife. So, he filed for divorce in November last year, and apparently in February this year, both got divorced. While signing for the reality show, the Selling Sunset star never knew how hard it would get to film in the future.

While promoting her reality TV series, Selling Sunset, the actress turned realtor created a meme of her, and posted it on her IG profile. She takes the wildly popular meme format “My plans vs. 2020” that is currently trending on Twitter. Chrishell turns the template into her own comical version – on one side, she puts a picture that indicates how the year was supposed to go, and on the other hand, another image portrays how it’s actually going. She gets super creative and takes the snapshot of her crying because of the divorce announcement and combines it with a happy picture of her holding the house keys. She captions the post as “If you can’t laugh at yourself, many people will do it for you!” Check out the meme below:

https://www.instagram.com/p/CBJisaOnw3e/?utm_source=ig_embed

Honestly, we didn’t know she was so hilarious in real life. But, now we’re in love with her sense of humor. We can’t wait to see season 3 and fall in love with her genuine and most relatable personality all over again. The followers love this particular post, and her boss and co-star, Jason, also left a comment that said, “Don’t sleep on 2020, tho (though), the second half still to come!” Very inspiring, Jason!

As promised, the next season is going to be extra-dramatic and entertaining because now the cast is more habitual to cameras and they show off their real personalities without any hesitation. Apart from Chrishell’s divorce, the season will also deal with some significant discussions about someone resigning from The Oppenheim Group. Who could that be? Well, for that, viewers have to wait till August 7th – that’s not so far.

‘Dating Around’ on Netflix: How to Follow the Season 2 Singles on Instagram

By Brett White @brettwhite

Dating Around cast

Photos: NETFLIX ; Illustration: Dillen Phelps

After almost a year and a half of waiting, viewers finally get a second date with the breezy and bingeable Netflix series Dating Around. Season 2 of the romantic reality show is now available to stream, and it really couldn’t have come at a better time. If you’ve been holed up in your home for months and desperately miss going on dates, eating at restaurants, or even just sitting across a table from another human being that’s not in your immediate family, then you’re gonna get into Dating Around Season 2.

But unlike other reality shows on Netflix that feature heightened situations like extreme bake-offs or highly-trained professionals like the Fab Five, Dating Around stars people like you and me—people of all ages, ethnicities, and orientations just out there in the world (in this case, New Orleans) looking for love. And since Dating Around is more of an anthology show, you might want to see more of a particular dater than their one episode allows. That’s where Instagram comes in!

Below you will find info on how to follow the six subjects of Season 2 on Instagram, as well as links to the six people they pick for their second date. There’s also a spoiler warning ahead of that info, just in case you aren’t ready to find out who they chose to see again!

Justin

Born and raised in New Orleans, Justin works in finance and tends to go for party girls. Now he’s on Dating Around to find a real connection. You can follow Justin on Instagram at @justinbigting.

SPOILER: Justin asks Ann out on a second date, even though their first date ended way earlier than the others. Ann loves dancing, and hates coming up with pick-up lines on dating apps. You can follow Ann on Instagram at @badnbowieee.

Are Justin and Ann still together? This info is hard to track down until one of them makes an official statement, but they’re at least friendly enough to follow each other on Instagram.2

Ben

Ben is definitely the nice guy of his friend group, and he’s coming out of a very long-term relationship. Can this college professor find love? More importantly, can he get used to dating? You can follow his journey on Instagram at @progresspian.

SPOILER: After some false starts, Ben gets a second date with Alex, a jazz musician who hosts a radio show. Are Ben and Alex still together? It’s hard to tell since Alex doesn’t appear to have an Instagram presence. Maybe Ben will spill the tea on his newly-active Insta?3

Deva

Deva moved to New Orleans from New York City to pursue her career as a musician—and she’s got a lot to live up to, because her father is blues musician Taj Mahal. You can follow Deva on Instagram at @devamahal.

SPOILER: In the end, Deva chose to go on a second date with New Orleans artist Maria. Definitely not a surprise, because these two really hit it off—Deva even knew about her art before their date! You can follow Maria on Instagram at @maria_sandhammer.

Are Deva and Maria still together? No word just yet, but they do follow each other on Instagram—and they like each other’s posts.4

Heather

Heather has a lot going on: she’s a tomboy, a professional makeup artist, pescatarian, and a big Peaky Blinders fan. You can follow her and see her makeup looks on Instagram at @hsalvaggio.

SPOILER: She ends up with the dapper Ernesto, who—like Heather—lives with his parents and also loves to travel. You can follow Ernesto on Instagram at @ernestoarmand0.

Are Heather and Ernesto still together? We don’t know for sure yet. They do follow each other on Instagram and they also comment on postsDating Around at least launched an enduring friendship—and maybe more?5

Brandon

Brandon’s struggled to find the right guy, but he finds a few that come close in this episode. This kindergarten teacher is quick with a quip and is not a fan of cigarettes. You can follow Brandon on Instagram at @bbofnola.

SPOILER: After hitting it off with a few guys, he goes for creative director and plant dad Justin. You can follow Justin on Instagram at @justinmadethat—and see his new life in Austin, Texas.

Are Brandon and Justin still together? Did they continue dating after Justin moved to Austin? It doesn’t seem so, as Justin follows Brandon on Instagram—but Brandon doesn’t follow Justin. Justin also doesn’t seem to like Brandon’s photos on Insta, so it looks like things didn’t get too serious between the two.6

Demi

Originally from Manhattan, Demi is a Latina who loves board games and works in digital marketing. You can follow Demi on Instagram at @demdiaz.

SPOILER: For her second date, Demi chose Zach–you remember, the guy that gave her a fairly romantic salsa dancing lesson on the street. You can follow Zach on Instagram at @rockstarzach.

Are Demi and Zach still together? They do follow each other on Instagram, so that’s a good sign. But, and this is maybe more telling, they aren’t active on each other’s pages.

Kelly Clarkson and her husband Brandon Blackstock call it quits

By Tamlyn Canham

Kelly Clarkson and her husband Brandon Blackstock are divorcing after nearly seven years of marriage.

Another Hollywood couple has gone their separate ways.

According to E! News, Kelly Clarkson filed for divorce from her husband, Brandon Blackstock, last week.

The 38-year-old reportedly cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their split.

Kelly and Brandon started dating in 2012 and became engaged shortly after.

The couple tied the knot in October 2013 and have two children together – River Rose and Remington Alexander.

“It came out of nowhere. It’s all so sad for the kids. They were always such a loving family. It never seemed like they had any issues,” a source told E!

Kelly and her husband were quarantining together before their split.

She spoke fondly of her husband during a 2017 interview with Redbook.

“When I met Brandon, I wasn’t looking for a friend. I have a lot of great friends! I was looking for a lover. I had never found someone I was truly passionate about, who I wanted to stay in bed with all day. The fact that I did, well…I was going to latch on and take advantage of that,” ‘The Voice’ coach said.

Kelly’s friends and family are said to be shocked by the couple’s split.

The talk show host hasn’t shown any signs of her troubles at home. She recently celebrated the launch of her new clothing line.

“I am SO excited about my collection with Wayfair. Like shoes off, jump-on-the-couch excited. I’ve handpicked every piece, and I think you’ll love the style — French-country with a modern twist – just as much as I do!” she wrote on Instagram a few weeks ago

https://www.instagram.com/p/CAu—MgJxZ/?utm_source=ig_embed

She last shared a picture of her husband in March. Brandon had been spending his time during quarantine giving his daughter horse riding lessons at their Montana ranch.

“Quarantine hair don’t care. Daddy’s giving River riding lessons and she loved it,” she wrote on Instagram.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B-QEsICAvH3/?utm_source=ig_embed

A clip shared on her talk show’s YouTube page in March gave Kelly’s fans a peek inside her life at the ranch.

“Brandon and I love wide-open spaces and coming to the ranch because both of us grew up in the countryside and… we literally work almost seven days a week – if not seven days a week. So, um, when we have time off we really like to check out,” she said.
