The Dutch Data Protection Authority (DPA) has launched an investigation into the popular social media platform, TikTok over privacy concerns.
The probe will examine whether TikTok adequately protects the privacy of children under Dutch law and the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation.
“We will investigate whether the app has a privacy-friendly design,” said Monique Verdier, deputy chair of the Dutch DPA.
“We’ll also check whether the information TikTok provides when children install and use the app is easy to understand and adequately explains how their personal data is collected, processed, and used.”
Authorities are also examining whether the app requires parental consent for TikTok to collect and use data on its young users.
TikTok’s popularity has spiked during the COVID-19 pandemic, and market intelligence provider Sensor Tower estimates that the app was the second-most installed application in April worldwide, with more than 107 million downloads.
The Chinese-owned social media app has previously come under scrutiny from both the United Kingdom and the United States over its data privacy regulations.
In February 2019, the company agreed to pay $5.7 million (around €5.25 million) as part of a settlement over allegations it “illegally collected images, voice recordings, and geolocation” of children, some younger than 13.
Last month, TikTok outlined some data security measures it was implementing, including new policies on global data residency, data movement, and data storage access protections worldwide.
The company says they are “committed to protecting the privacy of children” and only collect limited information from younger users, such as username, password, and birthday.
“TikTok’s top priority is protecting our users’ privacy and safety, especially our younger users,” the company said in a further statement to Euronews.
“We are aware of the investigation by the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens (Dutch Data Protection Authority) and are fully cooperating with them.”
The Dutch Data Protection Authority is expected to publish its initial findings later in 2020.

A mother horrified TikTok users when she shared a video of her babies with purple-stained mouths and joked that they both ate permanent markers — but it was actually from their medicine.
Christel Holland, a mom-of-two from San Diego, took to TikTok last week to share footage of her three-year-old daughter with a purple mouth as a baby followed by a similar clip of her one-year-old son.
‘Um, throwback to when my daughter ate a purple Sharpie when she was a little baby, and it stained her mouth for like a week…Oh, and then my son did it too,’ she says in the video, which has been viewed more than 6.6 million times.
In the caption, she noted that ‘only moms know what this actually is,’ but not all of them did, and some were quick to criticize Christel’s parenting.
‘But how does an INFANT even get ahold of a Sharpie?’ one person asked, while another added: ‘Uhm so how about GO TO THE ER not take a video!!!!’
Christel also explained herself in the comments, writing: ‘Before anybody freaks out they both got thrush when they were babies and the purple is actually a medication to get rid of it!!’
Oral thrush is an infection typically caused by a yeast known as Candida albicans. While anyone can get thrush, it happens most often to babies and toddlers, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems, according to WebMD.
The mom told BuzzFeed News that she took her daughter to the doctor a couple of years ago because her mouth was coated in a thick, white substance and was told it was thrush.
Her daughter was given gentian violet, an antiseptic dye used to treat fungal infections of the skin. It also can turn the skin purple.
‘I didn’t know much about thrush, since I was a new mom, but with my son, I noticed almost instantly that it was thrush and knew I needed to get the violet medicine as soon as possible because thrush can be a pretty big pain to get rid of,’ Christel explained to the outlet.
The criticism she received was so overwhelming that she shared multiple videos explaining the real reason why her children’s mouths were purple in the clip, revealing that one TikTok user called her a ‘bad parent.’
‘I don’t neglect my kids,’ she told her 303,100 followers. ‘That is actually not a Sharpie. That is medicine for something called thrush, which is a yeast infection. Something about that purple stuff makes the thrush go away.’
In another video, she defended her decision to joke about her children eating Sharpie markers.
‘I’m a great mom. Everybody who knows me knows that I’m a good mom,’ she says, adding: ‘TikTok is just one big joke. People make dark jokes all of the time, and it’s funny. If you don’t like dark humor, move on.’

TikTok allows us to give gifts to other users to rate their content, to thank them for ‘nourishing’ the application with new videos, original direct, etc. For this we have to use the TikTok purse and we can buy coins, store digital money that is exchanged for gifts or stickers that we send in direct. What is it for TikTok balance? So you can get money, monitor your videos and even get rich with the application.
You can use virtual gifts on TikTok that you can send to content creators as a “reward” to tell them that you like what they do and that you want to reward their effort. Of course, coins have money. You can buy credit, save it to your wallet and send gifts to tiktokers when they are broadcasting live. Only the most popular ones on TikTok can make live videos so you cannot send these gifts, purchased with real money, to any user of the application.
What is the TikTok wallet?
The TikTok wallet allows us to save the money that we have in the application, the balance that we accumulate. The “virtual” money that we have bought through real money. You can buy from 70 coins to 7,000, depending on the money you want to spend. Once you have the money, you can exchange it for gifts.
To get the coins you will have to follow these steps:
When you want to buy the coins you will have to confirm the payment with the payment method that you have associated in Google Play or in the App Store. Make sure you have an associated method or add it to continue the process. Once you have it, choose the coins you want to buy and confirm the purchase. When you have confirmed the payment, in that “Balance” section you will see everything you have in your wallet available to exchange for the different gifts in the TikTok catalog.
As we say, you can make gifts during the live broadcasts of tiktokers that you like. You will redeem your available balance for the gift you want and there is a fairly wide catalog from which you can choose according to the coins you want to spend: from a panda for just five coins to other more elegant gifts that will cost up to 5,000 coins in total (more than 50 euros) real)
To give it away, just click on the icon at the bottom of the live show and choose the one you want. The more expensive the gift you make to the other person, the larger you will appear in the chat of that direct and, therefore, the more impact you can have. It is an option to make yourself see on TikTok if you want to gain followers or if you want to get the attention of that person who is broadcasting the live in the app.
It is useless for a ‘tiktoker’ to have panda or koala stickers in the app as a collector. The gifts, regardless of what they cost, are converted into real money. Real money that is transferred to PayPal.
The gifts we send are turned into diamonds on TikTok for those people. Once the user has received 10,000 gift diamonds, they can withdraw them. With those diamonds you can get real money. When you have reached 10,000 diamonds, you can go to the TikTok Wallet and click “Withdraw”. Accept the terms and conditions, log in to your PayPal account and choose the amount you want to withdraw. You can choose to withdraw all or only part of it.
Diamonds become real money which are passed to your PayPal account. That is, we make gifts in the application so that content creators can monitor their videos and popularity without the need for advertising campaigns.
If you have withdrawn money because you had accumulated diamonds but you do not see it in your PayPal account, you can claim. From TikTok encourage to claim if you have not received the money within 24 hours since you made the withdrawal.
To claim it, you will have to send an email to the address transaction@tiktok.com in which you add:
The TikTok Restricted Mode is in the TikTok digital detox option and is intended to block certain options for the little ones or minors. Among them, the purse or balance of TikTok. It is a “danger” to use this function since buying coins can lead to a disbursement of hundreds of euros. Therefore, you can activate this parental control mode that deactivates live broadcasts but also deactivates withdrawals, purchase of coins or send gifts. You will not take risks for kids to send money to their idols through the app.

Charli D’Amelio and her sister Dixie are no longer part of the creative collective house
The Hype House is down a few members.
TikTok star Charli D’Amelio and her sister Dixie have left the creative collective known as the Hype House. Reps for the sisters confirmed their exit to The Hollywood Reporter.
“When the Hype House started to become more of a business, Charli and Dixie stepped away from that aspect,” the rep said. “While their businesses are separate, their friendships with the members continue.”
Charli and Dixie’s status with The Hype House came under question last month after the sisters stopped appearing on the brand’s Instagram and TikTok feeds. And further speculation was sparked when Charli, 16, and Hype House founder Chase Hudson (“Lil Huddy”), 17, split after a few months of dating.
Charli and Dixie are not the first Hype House members to leave. Social media star Daisy Keech announced her exit in March, claiming that she was not receiving the recognition she deserved as one of the house’s original founders.
The Hype House remaining members include Hudson, Connor Yates, Alex Warren, Addison Rae, Avani Gregg, Wyatt Xavier, Daisy Keech, Ryland Storms, Nick Austin, Ondreaz Lopez, Tony Lopez, Kouvr Annon, Thomas Petrou, Calvin Goldby, James Wright, Jack Wright and Patrick Huston.
And while they may no longer be apart of the creator collective, fans can still expect plenty of content from two of TikTok’s top stars. (Charli is currently the top followed star with 50 million followers, while Dixie, 18, also boasts an impressive 23.7 million followers.)
Charli previously said her family is considering starting a reality show.
“I mean, definitely something that would be super fun,” D’Amelio said of creating a show with her family. “I feel like no one really gets to see, but, people are always talking about how they think our family dynamic is pretty cool.”
